The United Kingdom is participating in the 12th session of the open-ended Intergovernmental Working Group on transnational corporations and other business enterprises with respect to human rights. The UK expressed its commitment to promoting responsible business conduct, preventing business-related human rights abuses, and supporting access to effective remedy.

The UK stated its commitment to ensuring businesses respect human rights, support sustainable development, and contribute to resilient economies. It recognised the potential value of an instrument that strengthens international cooperation and supports better outcomes for those affected by business-related human rights abuses.

However, the UK also noted that for any instrument to gain broad support and be effective, it must be clear, legally coherent, and workable for States, businesses, and rights-holders. During discussions on suggested redrafting of certain Articles, the UK will focus on ensuring proposed provisions complement existing legal frameworks and can be implemented in practice. The UK considers it important that the draft treaty remains aligned with established international standards, including the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

The UK is continuing to assess the Chair's proposals in greater depth and will reserve its position where appropriate. It remains committed to working constructively with all delegations to build consensus and identify practical solutions.

Why this matters: The development of an international instrument on business and human rights could impact how transnational corporations operate globally and how human rights abuses linked to businesses are addressed.
