A new UK government-funded forestry governance project, named RISE, was launched in the Solomon Islands this week. The initiative aims to develop a new carbon market designed to preserve forested areas and provide benefits to local communities.
RISE, which stands for Rights, Integrity, Safeguards and Equity in carbon markets, is intended to promote best practice for community-owned forest carbon projects, ensuring that benefits remain with local communities. British High Commissioner H.E. Paul Turner stated that the project focuses on promoting forest conservation and empowering local communities to preserve their forest lands.
Live and Learn Solomon Islands is leading the RISE initiative locally, in collaboration with Live and Learn International, Nakau and Plan Vivo Foundation. The project was launched on Tuesday 25 August 2026 in Honiara and will also be launched in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia this month.
