A recently signed trade agreement between the UK and the Gulf region is anticipated to encourage cross-border investment in digital infrastructure. This deal could accelerate the development of data centres in the UK.
The UK-GCC Free Trade Agreement, finalised in May 2026, commits both the UK and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to facilitating data flows across borders. It also prohibits unjustified data-localization requirements, which may simplify the storage of Gulf data in the UK and vice versa.
This framework could open opportunities for UK companies in areas such as engineering, cooling, power management, cybersecurity, and financial services for data centres. Gulf investment could be directed towards the UK market, with the UK providing technology and expertise in operating sophisticated digital infrastructure.
The agreement is not yet in force, with full implementation expected to take several months. Senior government and business leaders are scheduled to meet in London on October 20 for the UK-GCC Strategic Dialogue to advance the treaty and establish implementation timelines.
