On 24 September, the United Kingdom, representing the Coalition for Atrocity Prevention and Justice in Sudan, hosted a high-level event during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. The event focused on protecting civilians and frontline responders in Sudan.
Discussions at the event highlighted how the increasing use of drones is expanding the reach of hostilities across Sudan, leading to magnified harm for civilians, including humanitarian workers. The Coalition stressed that all parties must adhere to international humanitarian law, take measures to protect civilians and civilian objects, and ensure safe humanitarian access.
The Coalition remains deeply concerned by indiscriminate attacks on civilians, reports of starvation being used as a method of warfare, and sexual and gender-based violence. The destruction of homes, markets, healthcare facilities, and water systems is contributing to acute food insecurity and famine. The disruption of healthcare, including maternity care, is placing vulnerable civilians at particular risk.
The Coalition also expressed deep concern regarding external interference that continues to fuel the conflict. It called on states and other external actors to stop arming, financing, and enabling the war, and to comply with obligations under the 1591 Sudan sanctions regime.
The Coalition reaffirmed its commitment to pressing all parties to comply with international humanitarian law and human rights law, and to ensure accountability for violations. It supports efforts to document violations, preserve evidence, and advance accountability, including before the International Criminal Court.
