UK mobile network operators are set to switch off their 2G networks between 2029 and 2033. This change will require all 2G-only devices to be upgraded to 4G or 5G capable devices to ensure continued connectivity.
Most mobile devices in the UK already support 4G or 5G. However, older phones may need replacing to allow users to stay connected, make voice calls, and use data.
Beyond mobile phones, some personal equipment, including medical pendants, lift alarms, and fire alarms, also rely on 2G. Users of such devices are advised to check with their service providers to confirm compatibility with 4G or 5G, and upgrade if necessary.
Customers of mobile providers that do not operate a 2G network, such as Three, Superdrug Mobile, and Smarty, will not be affected by the 2G switch-off.
