  • Queen of Cups in Glastonbury serves Middle Eastern fare inspired by Jordanian roots.

A selection of neighbourhood restaurants across the UK are being highlighted as places worth travelling for, moving beyond traditional city centre dining. These establishments are described as smaller and more intimate, offering a local dining experience.

Among those featured is Chakana, a modern Peruvian restaurant located in Moseley, Birmingham. It is owned by Peruvian-born chef Robert Ortiz, who previously earned a Michelin star for London's Lima in 2014. The menu includes ceviches, causa, and lesser-known Peruvian dishes such as Andean potato stew.

In Brighton and Hove, Palmito is a 20-seat restaurant known for its unpredictable menu, which draws inspiration from various culinary destinations and includes many vegan options. Bristol's Wilson's, situated on Chandos Road in Redland, received a Michelin star in 2025. This farm-to-table restaurant, founded by Chef Jan Ostle and Mary Wilson, focuses on zero-waste kitchen practices and grows its own produce in a nearby market garden.

Pompette, a French restaurant and wine bar in Oxford's Summertown, opened in late 2018. Run by Pascal and Laura Wiedemann, it offers a relaxed atmosphere with a menu inspired by France and other European cuisines. Glastonbury's Queen of Cups, located in a 17th-century coaching inn, serves Middle Eastern food influenced by executive chef Ayesha Kalaji's Jordanian heritage. Belzan in Wavertree, Liverpool, is described as a friendly neighbourhood bistro.

What this means for you: If you are planning a staycation, these restaurants could be considered as dining destinations.
