UK petrol prices have reached their highest point since 2022, adding financial pressure on motorists ahead of the bank holiday weekend. The average cost of petrol is now 161.6p a litre, while diesel averages 183.4p a litre, according to the AA.
The last time petrol prices were this high was in November 2022. Millions of people are expected to make car journeys over the upcoming bank holiday weekend in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
The RAC estimates that UK motorways and major roads could experience the highest traffic levels since their records began in 2015, with Friday predicted to be the busiest day. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has been monitoring pump prices and found that some petrol stations were slow to pass on falls in wholesale energy prices to customers.
A government scheme, Fuel Finder, allows drivers to compare fuel costs across the UK. The AA noted that some stations, including in Aylesbury, Wembley, and Gloucester, sold petrol at around 10p below the national average on Thursday night.
