The vibrant streets of Manila came alive with the sound of 'God Save the King' as over 500 dignitaries gathered at the British Embassy's annual birthday reception for His Majesty King Charles III. This momentous occasion marked not only a celebration of the monarch's special day but also an opportunity to reflect on the 80-year milestone in diplomatic relations between the UK and the Philippines, with ties now stronger than ever.
British Ambassador Sarah Hulton OBE, speaking at the event, underscored the significance of this dual celebration. 'We're honouring our shared history while looking forward to building a brighter future together,' she said. The Ambassador outlined key areas where the two nations are working in tandem: boosting trade and economic growth, driving action on climate change, empowering women and girls, and promoting security across the region – initiatives that align with the UK's broader Indo-Pacific strategy.
The UK-Philippines partnership has shown remarkable progress over the past year. Bilateral trade has reached a record £3.2 billion, highlighting robust economic ties and potential for further growth. Beyond commerce, cooperation on climate and sustainable development continues to deepen, with the UK supporting the Philippines in its transition towards cleaner energy and increased national resilience. Defence and security cooperation have also strengthened, evidenced by ongoing negotiations for a Status of Visiting Forces Agreement (SOVFA) that would signify a shared commitment to a rules-based international system and closer military collaboration.
The connection between the two nations extends far beyond their diplomatic ties. Over 250,000 Filipinos live and work in the UK, forming an integral part of British society and contributing significantly to sectors such as healthcare. Notably, more than 35,000 Filipino nurses are making invaluable contributions to the NHS. The Chevening scholarship programme has also borne fruit, with alumni from the Philippines continuing to make a positive impact across various sectors.
Philippine Undersecretary Maria Theresa Dizon-De Vega reaffirmed her government's commitment to the relationship and expressed optimism for future cooperation. She highlighted shared goals in areas such as peace and stability, good governance, education, energy, infrastructure, innovation, and climate resilience. The British Embassy thanked corporate partners who supported this year's event.
