UK reaffirms commitment to Colombia Peace Agreement amid ongoing challenges

The UK has reiterated its commitment to the full implementation of Colombia's Peace Agreement, acknowledging significant challenges including the killing of 13 peace signatories in 2026.

  • Thirteen peace signatories have been killed in Colombia so far in 2026.
  • More than 11,000 former combatants remain demobilized and enrolled in reintegration programmes.
  • The UK plans to present a draft resolution to renew the mandate of the UN Verification Mission in Colombia.

The United Kingdom has affirmed its continued commitment to the full implementation of Colombia's Peace Agreement, as stated by Ambassador Sarah MacIntosh at a UN Security Council meeting. The UK acknowledged that significant challenges persist, with 13 peace signatories killed in 2026 and new armed groups threatening communities, former combatants, and human rights defenders.

Despite these challenges, the Peace Agreement has successfully demobilised over 11,000 former combatants who are now enrolled in reintegration programmes. The UK welcomed the Colombian Government's decision to uphold its constitutional and legal obligations arising from the Agreement.

The UK sees the next five years as critical for the Agreement's implementation and encourages the Colombian Government to use its provisions as part of an overall security framework. This framework should aim to tackle conflict drivers, build effective state presence, and prioritise the protection of vulnerable communities. The UK plans to present a draft resolution to the UN Security Council to renew the mandate of the UN Verification Mission in Colombia.
