Police protection extended to non-MPs, Home Secretary announces

The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, has announced that police support will be extended to political figures who are not currently MPs, citing "insufficient protection" for those in public life.

  • Police support will now cover peers, former MPs, and party spokespeople.
  • An urgent, independent review of security arrangements for high-profile figures, including politicians and royals, has also been announced.
  • The announcement follows the death of Reform UK spokeswoman Ann Widecombe three months ago.

Political figures who are not currently Members of Parliament will now receive police support, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced on Monday. Ms Mahmood told MPs there was "insufficient protection" for individuals serving in public life.

The new measures will apply to peers, former MPs, and party spokespeople. Ms Mahmood also announced an urgent, independent review of security arrangements for high-profile figures, including politicians and royals.

This announcement comes three months after Reform UK spokeswoman and former Conservative MP Ann Widecombe was found dead at her home in Devon. Joshua Kerry, 28, has been charged with her murder and with preparing acts of terror against Reform UK leader Nigel Farage.

Ms Mahmood stated on Monday: "For those who serve, politics is a calling, robust debate and criticism are part of this job, threats abuse and violence are not." She added, "We owe it to them and to everyone who believes in a fair and open country to ensure that those who serve at all levels receive the protection they deserve." The independent review will be led by former national security advisor Stephen Lovegrove.

Why this matters: The safety of politicians has been a prominent issue in recent years following the murders of Conservative MP Sir David Amess in 2021 and Labour MP Jo Cox in 2016.
