Leading House Democrats have condemned the federal agents' search of Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's home on Monday morning. They described the action as "deeply disturbing" and an example of the Trump administration's "corrupt weaponization" of the US government.
House Democratic leaders, including minority leader Hakeem Jeffries, party whip Katherine Clark, and caucus chair Pete Aguilar, issued a joint statement. They stated that the raid "raises serious questions about the continued corrupt weaponization of the federal government against [the president’s] adversaries." The leaders also vowed to "deliver full accountability for the rogue abuse of power" from the US Departments of Justice and Homeland Security.
Fox News, citing unnamed sources, reported that the search pertained to a criminal fraud investigation concerning Omar's immigration paperwork, which her late father completed when she was a child. Other Democratic representatives, including Ro Khanna, Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Pramila Jayapal, Delia C Ramirez, and Greg Casar, also criticised the search, with some calling for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to be dismantled.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (Cair) also spoke out, calling the raid "an obvious act of political persecution."
