Liberal Democrat MPs are set to meet on Tuesday night, with the possibility of collecting the 18 signatures necessary to initiate a confidence vote in party leader Sir Ed Davey. This comes amid growing discontent, which has escalated from private complaints to public criticism from council leaders and frontbench resignations last week.
Sir Ed Davey is noted as the most successful liberal parliamentary leader in a century. Under his leadership, the Liberal Democrats secured 72 seats in 2024 with 3.5 million votes, a significant increase from 11 seats with 3.7 million votes in 2019.
Sir Ed's strategy focuses on expanding the party's geographic base, mobilising tactical voters, and establishing the Liberal Democrats as the best option to prevent a right-wing government led by Reform UK. His opponents, however, argue that parliamentary influence is diminished if voters do not notice it.
