  • The UK supports Professor Dapo Akande's candidacy for the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
  • The UK contributed over £140,000 this year to the UN Programme of Assistance and the ICJ judicial fellowship.

Lieve Caron, UK Assistant Legal Adviser, delivered a statement at the UN Sixth Committee today, 8 October 2026, emphasising the UK's priority in upholding and promoting the rule of law both domestically and internationally. The statement highlighted the Prime Minister's earlier remarks at the UN General Assembly, affirming the UK's commitment to its values and the rule of law.

The UK considers the rule of law to be the cornerstone of any just and prosperous society, playing a vital role in sustaining peace, addressing conflict, and fostering economic growth, enhanced security, and sustainable development. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has previously stated that the world faces growing instability and increasing threats to international law and democracy, making the rule of law more crucial than ever.

The UK plans to promote these values globally through multilateral cooperation, supporting the development of international law, and promoting accountability. As part of its multilateral cooperation efforts, the UK supports institutions such as the International Court of Justice and has contributed over £140,000 this year to the UN Programme of Assistance and the ICJ judicial fellowship. The UK also welcomed the UN80 reform initiative, aiming for a more efficient, effective, and coherent UN.

The UK continues to play a role in shaping international legal discourse, supporting the International Law Commission and chairing the Steering Committee for the London Conference on International Law. The 4th Conference was held last week, bringing together international law experts. Additionally, the UK remains a strong supporter of the International Criminal Court, advocating for accountability for serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.

Why this matters: The UK's statement outlines its strategic approach to international relations, emphasising the importance of legal frameworks for global stability and prosperity.
