The UK has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to Somalia during the first visit to the country by the Minister for Development and Africa, Kirsty McNeill MP. During her visit, the minister met with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to discuss Somalia’s political and security priorities, including the need for progress towards a credible and sustainable transition to Somali-led security.
Ms McNeill encouraged Somali leaders to engage in constructive dialogue to strengthen national unity and advance political progress. She underlined that continued progress on political dialogue and a security transition will be critical for maintaining international confidence and support.
The minister also discussed Somalia’s humanitarian challenges and the importance of building resilience to future shocks. Last year, the UK provided humanitarian and climate resilience support to more than 950,000 people. Visiting a World Food Programme warehouse in Mogadishu, Ms McNeill observed how UK support is reaching those affected by drought and food insecurity.
The UK stands ready to provide further non-lethal assistance to Somali forces through the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), which includes food rations, tents, medical supplies, and casualty evacuation. Progress on political dialogue among Somali leaders and on plans for Somalia’s security transition will be important in confirming future support.
