Britain is set for an extended spell of sunshine and warmth lasting through to the late May bank holiday weekend, the Met Office has forecast, marking a welcome shift after a mixed spring.
Temperatures are expected to climb steadily across England and Wales, with highs potentially reaching the low to mid-20s Celsius. Northern Ireland and Scotland will also see pleasant conditions, though cooler than the south, with some western and northern coastal areas experiencing more cloud or breezes.
Southern and south-eastern England will see the highest temperatures, potentially hitting 20-25°C with prolonged sunshine. The Midlands and northern England will enjoy warm, sunny weather a couple of degrees cooler, whilst Wales can expect similar conditions with temperatures reaching the low 20s, particularly inland. Scotland will see milder conditions in the mid to high teens with good sunny spells, though the far north and west may experience more unsettled weather. Northern Ireland will enjoy settled conditions with temperatures in the mid-to-high teens.
The Met Office has advised the public to be mindful of moderate to high UV levels, recommending sun cream, hats, and seeking shade during the strongest sunshine between 11am and 3pm. Wind speeds will generally remain light at below 10-15mph, enhancing the feeling of warmth, though coastal areas may be slightly breezier.
The forecast offers hope for those planning outdoor activities over the bank holiday, with parks, beaches, and gardens set to bask under largely blue skies. The settled weather is attributed to a developing area of high pressure expected to dominate the UK's weather patterns for the foreseeable future.
