The United Kingdom has asserted that Russia's intensified attacks against Ukraine and its expanded disruptive activities across Europe do not signify success. Arron Newble, Counsellor for Politico-Military Affairs, stated on 24 September 2026, that these actions reflect the persistent failure of Russian forces to achieve decisive progress on the battlefield.
According to the UK statement, Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukraine in recent months, launching record numbers of drones and maintaining a high rate of missile attacks on cities, energy networks, and civilian infrastructure. Simultaneously, Russia has expanded disruptive activities beyond Ukraine, affecting the borders, airspace, and infrastructure of participating states across Europe.
Russia has reportedly sustained approximately 1.5 million casualties, including 42,000 in August alone, while its advances have slowed in 2026 compared to 2025. Despite concentrating significant forces in eastern Ukraine, Russia has not achieved a decisive breakthrough. The UK reiterated its firm commitment to Ukraine, pledging continued support for its sovereignty, freedom, and territorial integrity.
The UK also highlighted Ukraine's repeated offers of an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, which Russia continues to refuse. Russia, by contrast, has made demands that would amount to Ukraine's surrender while intensifying mass air attacks. The UK concluded that the Russian government is not seriously interested in peace.
