The UK Government is set to introduce new protective measures to safeguard businesses investing in the Falkland Islands from Argentine domestic measures. These measures target companies and individuals involved in lawful economic activity.
The government is preparing these measures under Protection of Trading Interests (PTI) legislation. This move aims to protect UK businesses from pressure to comply with Argentine domestic measures and ensure they can continue to make commercial decisions in accordance with UK law.
Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds stated that the government "will act where Argentina seeks to impede lawful UK commercial activity." Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband added that "Argentina’s attempts to intimidate businesses and individuals engaged in legitimate commercial activity are unacceptable."
The purpose of these measures is to protect UK or UK-based companies from being compelled to comply with extraterritorial measures targeting lawful activity connected to the Falkland Islands, not to restrict lawful commercial activity with Argentina.
