UK to push for UN reforms focusing on effectiveness and value for money

The UK will advocate for practical reforms within the United Nations during the 81st session of the UN Fifth Committee, focusing on improving effectiveness, accountability, and value for money.

  • The UK will focus on reforms to the Regular Budget, the Resident Coordinator (RC) System, and the Common System.
  • Proposals for the 2027 budget are welcomed, with further proposals to reduce senior posts in 2028.
  • The Committee will consider recommendations on the Noblemaire principle for a modern compensation package.

The UK has stated its intention to press for practical reforms at the United Nations during the 81st session of the UN Fifth Committee. These reforms aim to enhance the UN's effectiveness, sharpen accountability, and deliver value for money.

Archie Young, UK Ambassador to the General Assembly, outlined three priority areas. The first is the Regular Budget, with the UK welcoming the continuation of the UN80 agenda in the 2027 budget and anticipating proposals to reduce senior posts in 2028.

The second priority is the Resident Coordinator (RC) System, where proposals will be assessed based on the need for sustainable and predictable funding, supported by strong accountability. The third area is the Common System, which involves considering the Comprehensive Review and recommendations on the Noblemaire principle to secure a modern, fair, and sustainable compensation package.

The UK encourages the Secretariat and Bureau to outline how the Fifth Committee will advance this work, aiming to translate reform commitments into concrete results and maintain budget discipline.

Why this matters: The reforms could strengthen the UN's positive impact for people across the world and provide a strong foundation for the incoming Secretary-General.
