The United Kingdom is urging Libya's leaders to take immediate steps to implement a political roadmap towards elections, highlighting the potential for improved economic certainty and job creation. Ambassador Sarah MacIntosh, UK Permanent Representative to the UN, stated that the people of Libya desire progress towards elections and unified, strengthened, and accountable institutions.
Almost a year after the UN Security Council welcomed a roadmap towards elections, its two initial milestones have yet to be implemented by Libya's parties. The UK suggests two immediate steps: implementing the US-facilitated unified budget agreement and finalising the outcome of the UNSMIL-facilitated '4+4' small convening discussions.
The UK warns that stalled progress risks stability, citing recent concerning signs including issues around the Central Bank Governor, an assassination, and drone attacks. Conversely, political progress is expected to support a stable Dinar, provide jobs and youth employment, and ensure stable supplies of fuel and essential goods.
