The United Kingdom has urged Libyan parties to honour commitments made to amend the country's electoral laws and to hold parliamentary and presidential elections within 24 months. This call follows an agreement reached through the 4+4 process.
Ambassador Sarah MacIntosh, UK Permanent Representative to the UN, stated at a UN Security Council meeting on Libya that the commitment from both sides represents a significant step forward. She emphasised that implementation now requires participants in the 4+4 process to honour their commitments and not to reopen or relitigate settled issues.
The UK also welcomed the commitment made by the parties to the 4+4 at their 4 October meeting to make all efforts to prevent the fragmentation of Libya’s judiciary. The UK supports UNSMIL's role in facilitating a durable political settlement and supporting the reunification of Libya’s institutions.
Reports of enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention, and attacks on civilian infrastructure were described as deeply troubling. Accountability for human rights violations and abuses remains essential, requiring enhanced independence and capacity of Libya’s judiciary and institutions to collect evidence and investigate.
