Heavy rain and strong winds will batter the UK over the coming days, with the Met Office issuing weather warnings and the RAC urging drivers to take extra precautions on dangerous roads.
The North West and South West of England will bear the brunt of persistent downpours, with localised surface water flooding expected. Wales faces substantial rainfall that could create difficult driving conditions and reduced visibility, whilst Scotland and Northern Ireland will see strong winds accompanying the rain, particularly along coasts and higher ground.
Wind speeds will reach 40-50 mph in exposed areas, with potentially higher gusts creating hazardous conditions for high-sided vehicles. Temperatures will remain mild at 8-12°C across most regions, though will feel cooler in the wind and rain.
The RAC has issued comprehensive safety advice for motorists. Drivers should check tyre tread depth and pressure, ensure all lights work, and reduce speed during heavy downpours. Following distances must be increased to guard against aquaplaning, whilst strong winds require drivers to grip steering wheels firmly and anticipate sudden gusts, particularly when passing lorries on open roads.
The motoring organisation recommends planning journeys carefully, allowing extra travel time, and postponing non-essential trips during the worst conditions. Drivers should check for road closures before setting off and prepare for potential delays.
The Met Office continues updating its weather warnings, with the public urged to stay informed through official channels.
