Britons can expect a deceptive start to the day, with bright sunshine giving way to potentially heavy thunderstorms across much of England and Wales this afternoon. The Met Office warns of scattered downpours and lightning strikes, particularly targeting southern and western regions after what promises to be a pleasant morning.
Central and eastern England will see the best of the early conditions, with sunshine breaking through before isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms develop. The South West and southern England face the highest risk of dramatic afternoon weather, whilst temperatures climb to 17-19°C in the South East under generally light winds.
Scotland presents a mixed picture, with western and northern areas already cloudy and wet, especially across the Highlands and Islands. Central and eastern Scotland may enjoy brief sunshine before isolated showers arrive later. Temperatures remain cooler at 12-15°C.
Wales starts bright and dry with good sunshine, but southern areas face the same afternoon thunderstorm risk as southern England. Temperatures will reach the mid to high teens, around 15-17°C.
Northern Ireland looks set for the most unsettled day, with cloudier skies and patchy rain likely, particularly in western areas. Despite some drier interludes, conditions remain generally unstable with temperatures between 13-15°C.
The Met Office urges the public to monitor local forecasts closely, especially those planning outdoor activities, due to the potential for sudden weather changes and heavy downpours. Winds will generally remain light at 5-10 mph, though gusts could strengthen around developing thunderstorms.
