Winds of up to 75mph and heavy rain will batter large parts of the UK over the coming days, with the Met Office issuing multiple yellow weather warnings amid fears of travel disruption and flooding.
The strongest gusts will hit exposed coastal regions and higher ground, whilst widespread winds of 50-60mph are forecast across inland areas. The combination of fierce winds and torrential rain has prompted warnings of potential power cuts and localised flooding.
Yellow wind warnings cover England, Wales, and parts of Northern Ireland, with coastal areas in south-west England and along the Welsh coast facing the worst conditions. Inland regions including the Midlands and northern England will also see significant wind speeds that could create hazardous driving conditions for high-sided vehicles and damage temporary structures. The Met Office has urged residents to secure garden furniture and watch for falling branches.
Heavy rainfall warnings are in place for parts of Scotland and northern England, with 20-30mm expected widely and some areas seeing up to 60mm in short periods. The downpours on already saturated ground raise the risk of surface water flooding and poor driving conditions due to standing water and reduced visibility. Commuters face delays and are advised to allow extra journey time.
Despite the unsettled weather, temperatures will remain mild at 8-12 degrees Celsius, though strong winds will make conditions feel much colder. A deep Atlantic low pressure system is driving the storms, bringing successive weather fronts across the country.
Emergency services recommend checking local flood warnings, charging mobile phones ahead of potential power cuts, and avoiding unnecessary travel during peak conditions. Residents in flood-prone areas should prepare protection measures, whilst everyone should monitor Met Office updates as warnings may change.
