The United Kingdom has welcomed the recent announcement regarding the dissolution of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into central government structures in Syria. Ambassador Kate Foster, UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, stated that this is an important step towards a peaceful, stable, and unified Syria.
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on Syria, Ambassador Foster also welcomed direct talks between Israel and Syria, which took place in Jordan earlier this week. These talks are seen as a positive step towards long-term peace, with the UK encouraging continued dialogue to strengthen regional security.
The UK also expressed support for the United States' decision to remove Syria's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism, describing it as another important step on Syria's path towards prosperity and stability. The UK further welcomed Secretary-General Guterres’ visit to Damascus, calling it a milestone in Syria’s political recovery and the relationship between the Syrian Government and the United Nations.
Despite this progress, challenges remain, with over 15 million people requiring humanitarian assistance and more than 7 million acutely food insecure. The UK reiterated its unwavering opposition to the use of chemical weapons, recalling the Ghouta attack thirteen years ago.
