Ukraine has dismissed threats from Iran following a drone attack on an Iranian cargo vessel in the Caspian Sea on Saturday. Kyiv maintains the vessel was involved in transporting military supplies to Russia, a move that has directly linked the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran for the first time.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, stated on X that Iran's threats were "unjustified and groundless." He accused Tehran of being a "direct accomplice to Russian aggression against Ukraine," citing Iran's supply of weapons, including Shahed drones, to Moscow since 2022. President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously announced "very good results" from long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea, specifically mentioning vessels used for military cargo linked to Iran. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) confirmed its drones hit an oil platform, a Russian missile boat, and "cargo ships that are under international sanctions."
Iran has reacted with outrage to the assault. Its ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, claimed the targeted ship, identified as the "Anna," was anchored near the Volga River. However, Ukraine's ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk, insisted the vessel was carrying components for drones and missiles, not civilian cargo, from Iran to Russia. Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, described the attack as a "blatant UN Charter violation" and warned it "cannot go unanswered." He also denied any Iranian intervention in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and accused Ukraine of trying to divert attention from Russian attacks on grain ships.
The Caspian Sea serves as a crucial supply route between Russia and Iran, nations that share a close military relationship. Iran began supplying Russia with its Shahed drones in 2022, which have since been used extensively in Ukraine. Reports also suggest Iran has been supplying short-range ballistic missiles to Russia. In turn, Ukraine has recently sent military experts to several Gulf states to assist with defence against Iranian drone attacks, highlighting the broader regional implications of these military ties.
While the Caspian Sea strike aims to disrupt vital trading routes and impact Russia's economy, some analysts question the strategic wisdom of Ukraine potentially opening another front against Iran. Ivan Stupak, a former intelligence official, told the BBC that while disrupting trade routes is logical, "it's not a good idea for Ukraine to have another battlefront with Iran." The UK Foreign Office has not issued specific new travel advice related to this incident, but British nationals are advised to monitor official guidance for the region.
