Plymouth is set to swelter in 27C heat as the Met Office forecasts a four-day heatwave bringing temperatures up to 26C across much of the UK this week.
The Devon coastal city tops the list of seven hottest areas identified by forecasters, with peak temperatures expected on Wednesday and Thursday. A yellow weather warning covers the entire UK as the mercury rises.
According to Met Office data, the seven hottest areas are:
1. Plymouth, Devon: 27C expected on Wednesday and Thursday
2. St Austell, Cornwall: 26C forecast for Thursday and Friday
3. Exeter, Devon: 25C on Wednesday and Thursday
4. Southampton, Hampshire: 25C on Wednesday and Thursday
5. Cardiff, Wales: 24C on Wednesday and Thursday
6. Edinburgh, Scotland: 23C on Wednesday and Thursday
7. Belfast, Northern Ireland: 22C on Wednesday and Thursday
The heatwave comes with a warning of thunderstorms and heavy rain expected to arrive on Friday, potentially bringing an abrupt end to the warm spell.
Health officials are urging residents to take precautions, particularly elderly and vulnerable people. The Met Office recommends drinking plenty of water, staying in shade where possible, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.
