Uncertainty surrounds Patrick Vieira's Senegal coaching role amid FSF issues

Patrick Vieira's appointment as Senegal's new head coach faces uncertainty, with the country's football federation (FSF) dealing with off-field issues, including an unsigned contract and a contested leadership election.

  • Patrick Vieira's appointment as Senegal's head coach has been announced, but he has not yet signed a contract.
  • The Senegal football federation (FSF) is awaiting a Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) ruling by Friday regarding its leadership election.
  • Senegal is scheduled to play in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on 23 September against Mozambique.

Questions are being raised over Patrick Vieira's appointment as the new head coach of Senegal, with the former France captain yet to sign a contract. The date for his official presentation remains unknown, as the Senegal football federation (FSF) continues discussions regarding "administrative and contractual arrangements" for the 50-year-old.

Vieira was unanimously approved to succeed Pape Thiaw at an FSF meeting on Monday. However, the FSF is currently dealing with off-field issues, including uncertainty surrounding the termination of Thiaw's deal, who is reportedly demanding almost $815,000 (£600,000) in outstanding wages and bonuses.

A ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) is expected by Friday concerning the contested election of the current FSF leadership. This ruling could potentially challenge the legitimacy of the FSF hierarchy and, consequently, Vieira's selection as head coach. Senegal is set to return to action on 23 September for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Mozambique.

Why this matters: The ongoing issues within the FSF and the pending Cas ruling could impact the stability and leadership of the national football team as they prepare for upcoming international fixtures.
