An uninsured driver has been jailed for nine years and four months after losing control of his car and mounting a pavement, killing a young woman and seriously injuring her friend.
Saleh Hassan, 20, admitted causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and causing death while uninsured. He was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday and also disqualified from driving for 12 years and eight months.
Natasha Thorp, 21, died at the scene on Brassington Avenue, Sutton Coldfield, on 22 August 2025, after being hit by Hassan's Toyota Corolla. Her friend sustained serious leg injuries in the incident, which occurred just before midnight.
West Midlands Police PC Lee Riley stated that Natasha's family now have to live with the result of Hassan's actions, expressing hope that the conviction and sentencing might bring them some peace.
