University clearing for 2026 is open until 19 October, offering a route for students to secure a university place. This process is available to those who applied after 30 June, did not receive or accept offers, or did not meet the conditions of their original offers.
Students can also use clearing if they wish to change their firm place, or if they performed better than expected and want to explore different universities. The Ucas website features a search tool to find courses with clearing vacancies, which is the only official and most up-to-date list.
Ahead of results day on 13 August, education consultant Clementine Wade suggests students prepare by listing all possible grade outcomes and corresponding alternative university courses. Haadi Nasir, a student who used clearing, noted that it allows applications to an unlimited number of universities, unlike the initial Ucas application's five-choice limit.
Jamie Bradford, head of future students at Leicester De Montfort University, advises students to have their results in hand before contacting universities. He also stresses the importance of discussing the course, campus, and accommodation, rather than just seeking an offer based on grades.
While popular courses fill quickly, students are advised not to rush their decision. Wade recommends asking universities how much time is available to accept an offer, as this can vary.
