The death of 21-year-old Mary Money in Surrey's Merstham Tunnel in 1905 remains unsolved, with no suspect ever charged.

  • Mary Money's body was found in Merstham Tunnel on 24 September 1905, with a silk scarf stuffed into her mouth.
  • She was seen on a train with an unknown man who reportedly fled at Redhill station.
  • The inquest concluded she died from severe injuries caused by a train, but could not determine if she fell or was thrown.

The mysterious death of Mary Money, 21, in Surrey's Merstham Tunnel on 24 September 1905 remains unsolved over 120 years later. A railway inspector discovered her body during a routine inspection.

Initial theories suggested she might have taken her own life, but evidence later indicated she may have been pushed from a train. A silk scarf was found stuffed into her mouth, and signs suggested she hit the tunnel going out backwards from the carriage, according to former Merstham Society chairman Chris Green.

Money, who was from Surrey but lived in London, was seen on the 21:12 BST service from London Bridge to Brighton with an unknown man. The train guard observed them deliberately turning away at East Croydon, and Green stated the man "made a dash for the exit" at Redhill, with no woman seen.

Her body was found with severe injuries, including two broken legs, "one arm almost missing", and skull injuries. The inquest's verdict was that Money died from severe injuries caused by a train, but the coroner found insufficient evidence to determine if she fell or was thrown.
