A heat dome is forecast to settle across the south-western US through the end of August and into early September, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). This weather event is expected to affect more than 45 million people.
Daytime temperatures are predicted to reach 43-46C (110-115F) in parts of the south-west, with limited cooling overnight. The NWS has categorised these temperatures as Extreme HeatRisk, indicating a danger to individuals without proper hydration and cooling.
The NWS advises individuals in affected regions to limit outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and wear loose, lightweight clothing. Checking on vulnerable people, such as older adults and children, is also recommended. Some cities, including Los Angeles, are providing cooling centres for residents.
