The US government is about to unleash a massive £3.8 billion (approximately $5bn) injection of cash into artificial intelligence research, with far-reaching implications for scientists and everyday Americans alike. At its core, this 'AI for Science' initiative aims to leverage cutting-edge tech to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing humanity – from cancer treatment breakthroughs to developing greener building materials.
One key factor driving this effort is providing researchers with access to top-notch resources. According to Michael Kratsios, Chief Technology Adviser to Donald Trump, scientists will be able to tap into the Department of Energy's advanced supercomputers, AI capabilities and vast datasets. This, he explained, would equip them with the tools needed to conduct experiments using sophisticated algorithms.
As part of this initiative, 15 federal agencies are coming together – including those responsible for Health and Human Services, Energy, Transportation, Defence, and Interior – to collaborate on diverse projects. The goal is to harness vast government datasets to train AI models and answer complex scientific questions, such as identifying root causes of chronic diseases or accelerating drug discovery.
Beyond the direct investment, the Trump administration also plans a significant overhaul of how US government allocates federal research funding. A White House report outlined a strategy to support individual scientists and AI applications more directly, moving away from the traditional model of primarily funding universities. This shift, the report suggests, aims to give the administration greater oversight and control over the deployment of research funds, asserting that "Federal support for science must be politically accountable."
This move comes amidst previous attempts by the Trump administration to exert more control over federal research spending during its second term – which have faced legal challenges. A recent ruling blocked attempts to cut funding to universities engaged in scientific and medical research, while Microsoft has announced its support for the initiative, pledging £28 million (approximately $40m) in AI computing credits over three years.
