Authorities in Utah have released video footage showing the moment a police dog named Bruno sustained serious injuries after leaping from a freeway overpass. The bomb-sniffing dog is now recovering at home.
Bruno suffered two broken legs and a fractured jaw during the September incident. He was assisting Utah state troopers in Summit County with the investigation of a suspicious package found abandoned on the roadside.
The Park City police department released dash-cam footage this week, which includes the moments before, during, and after Bruno's leap onto a roadway beneath a ramp connecting I-80 and US 40. The video shows Bruno chasing a ball thrown by his handler, Officer Wayne Henderson, before veering and leaping over a concrete wall.
Following the fall, the two-year-old chocolate labrador was airlifted to a veterinarian in Salt Lake City for emergency surgery. The suspicious package, reported by a motorist, was later identified as harmless road debris, believed to be a battery.
Park City Police Chief Wade Carpenter stated that Bruno is continuing to recuperate from his injuries. It is not known if he will return to work, though the police department expressed happiness at his return home and progress towards recovery.
