Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has stated that the England Test captaincy could be "exactly what Joe Root needs." Vaughan, speaking on the Test Match Special podcast, suggested that the 35-year-old's return to the role might provide motivation in the later stages of his career.
Root, who previously led the team from 2017 to 2022, steps back into the captaincy under interim head coach Marcus Trescothick. This follows the sacking of Brendon McCullum, with New Zealander Stephen Fleming set to take over as Test leadership for the upcoming winter tour of South Africa.
Vaughan speculated that Root might have needed this return to the captaincy to reignite his enthusiasm for Test cricket. He also suggested that Root had a "dodgy hand" during his initial captaincy, citing the focus on white-ball cricket and the challenges of leading during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Regarding the new head coach, Vaughan described Fleming as a "very experienced" choice, appointed on a four-year deal. Fleming joins after leaving Chennai Super Kings and is noted for his strong man-management skills and tactical acumen, which Vaughan believes will complement McCullum, who remains the white-ball coach.
Vaughan also expressed a desire for England to prioritise winning, regardless of style, and highlighted the need for improved technical coaching, particularly in batting, within the Test team.
