Vigil held for family of four who died in Shoreham sea incident

A vigil has taken place in Shoreham, West Sussex, for a family of four who died after getting into difficulty in the sea on Tuesday.

  • Hassan El-Khawas, 55, Zeina Alayn, 37, and their 14-year-old daughter Sara died, with six-year-old Saja El-Khawas dying in hospital on Friday.

The community in Shoreham, West Sussex, has paid its respects to a family of four who died after getting into difficulty in the sea on Tuesday. A vigil was held on Saturday morning at Kingston Beach, the site of the incident, alongside a one-minute silence in Shoreham town centre.

Hassan El-Khawas, 55, Zeina Alayn, 37, and their 14-year-old daughter Sara, died despite paramedic efforts. Six-year-old Saja El-Khawas died in hospital on Friday.

According to Sussex Police, the family had travelled from their London home to visit Shoreham. They entered the water from the beach at Shoreham Fort at about 14:00 BST before getting into trouble.

A Sussex Police spokesperson stated that the investigation remains open, with the current hypothesis being a tragic accident and no third-party involvement. Prime Minister Andy Burnham called the incident a "terrible family tragedy".
