Young people across Wales and the Borders will experience the deadly reality of railway trespassing through new virtual reality technology launched by Network Rail to tackle a problem that kills and injures hundreds each year.
The VR programme places users in simulated scenarios showing high-speed train impacts, live electrical lines, and severe injuries from railway infrastructure. The immersive experience aims to demonstrate consequences that traditional safety leaflets cannot convey.
Railway trespassing causes numerous fatalities and serious injuries across the UK annually, disrupting train services for thousands of passengers. The technology targets younger audiences in areas with higher trespassing incidents, moving beyond standard presentations to engage tech-savvy generations.
Railway safety officers are rolling out the programme in schools and community groups throughout the region. The sessions highlight hidden dangers including the silent approach of modern trains and powerful suction from passing services—threats often underestimated by those unfamiliar with the railway environment.
The initiative forms part of Network Rail's broader safety commitment, complementing existing fencing, signage and awareness campaigns. By allowing young people to virtually experience consequences, the programme aims to foster better decision-making around railway lines in real situations.
"This marks a modern approach to safety education," officials said, noting the technology's effectiveness with younger audiences more receptive to interactive learning tools. The programme provides what Network Rail describes as a "powerful, memorable and impactful" alternative to traditional safety methods.
