Wakefield Trinity secured the Super League title on Saturday evening, overcoming Warrington 23-10 at Old Trafford. This triumph comes just two years after the club was competing in the Championship, marking a remarkable ascent to the top tier of English rugby league.
The club's success is attributed to a combination of loyalty and strategic recruitment. Seven of the 17 players who celebrated the victory were part of the Wakefield squad in the Championship two years prior. Full-back Max Jowitt, who has spent his entire career with Wakefield, described the journey from relegation in 2023 to winning the title as "beyond my wildest dreams."
Owner Matt Ellis, who acquired the club when it was struggling, reportedly invested an estimated £10m. This investment covered stadium renovations and squad development. The team's recruitment strategy also involved a "moneyball" approach, bringing in players from Australia's lower grades, such as Caleb Hamlin-Uele and Caius Faatili, who have since become key figures.
Wakefield Trinity's victory has captured national attention and has led to discussions about a possible World Club Challenge showdown with NRL champions Sydney Roosters early next year.
