Wakefield Trinity have booked their spot in the Super League Grand Final for the first time, overcoming treble-chasing Wigan Warriors with a commanding 33-6 victory in Saturday's play-off semi-final.
The club, which was playing in rugby league's second tier in 2024, will now compete for the Super League title against Warrington Wolves at Old Trafford on 3 October. England winger Tom Johnstone, who scored two tries against Wigan, described the prospect of winning the Grand Final as a dream that could become a reality.
Wakefield's journey to the final follows a significant transformation since their relegation in 2023. A takeover by kitchen magnate Matt Ellis and the leadership of head coach Daryl Powell are credited with the club's resurgence from the Championship.
Former England half-back Kevin Brown, a BBC pundit, hailed Wakefield's performance against Wigan as "definitely their best ever performance in Super League." Captain Mike McMeeken also noted the achievement as one of the best moments of his career.
