Warwickshire Close in on County Championship Title as Leicestershire Face Relegation

Warwickshire are on the verge of securing the 2026 County Championship title after a dominant opening day against Leicestershire, who are facing relegation.

  • Warwickshire finished day one five runs ahead of Leicestershire with six wickets in hand, after bowling them out for 125.
  • Leicestershire's relegation is likely, with an appeal lodged against a 27-point deduction.
  • Surrey's strong performance against Somerset has diminished Somerset's title hopes.

Warwickshire are poised to claim the 2026 County Championship title on day two of the final round, following a commanding performance against Leicestershire at Edgbaston. On the opening day, Warwickshire bowled out Leicestershire for just 125 runs, with Ethan Bamber taking four for 42. The Bears ended the day five runs ahead with six wickets remaining.

Leicestershire's prospects of avoiding relegation appear slim, with a 27-point deduction for a poor pitch likely to seal their fate. The Midlands club has lodged an appeal with the independent Cricket Discipline Panel regarding this deduction.

Elsewhere in Division One, Surrey's strong showing against second-placed Somerset, racking up 327 for four, has significantly reduced Somerset's hopes of winning the Championship. Dan Lawrence scored his sixth century of the campaign for Surrey.

In Division Two, Northamptonshire's promotion aspirations were dashed after being bowled out for 103 by Middlesex, while Kent is in a strong position for the second promotion spot behind champions Durham.
