Waymo, the self-driving technology company owned by Alphabet, has launched a paid membership programme priced at £30 per month, offering subscribers priority access to rides and cashback on their journeys. The initiative, announced this week, marks the first time the firm has introduced a recurring subscription for its autonomous taxi service.
Under the scheme, members will receive priority ride allocation during peak times and earn cashback on eligible trips, which can be redeemed against future fares. The programme is currently being rolled out in cities where Waymo operates, including Phoenix and San Francisco, with no immediate confirmation of expansion to the UK.
The move comes as the autonomous vehicle industry seeks to transition from pilot projects to commercially viable operations. Subscription models are increasingly being explored by tech and transport firms to secure predictable income and deepen user engagement. Waymo's offering mirrors similar strategies used by ride-hailing apps and food delivery services.
Industry analysts suggest that while the £30 fee may seem modest, it could significantly boost Waymo's revenue if adopted widely. "This is a clever way to lock in frequent users and gather more data on travel patterns," said one transport technology analyst. "For UK investors, it signals that autonomous ride-hailing is moving closer to mainstream adoption, though regulatory hurdles remain in Britain."
Waymo faces competition from other autonomous vehicle developers, including Cruise and Tesla, as well as traditional ride-hailing platforms. The subscription model could also pressure rivals to introduce similar loyalty programmes, potentially reshaping pricing dynamics in the sector.
