The 16 new constituency names used in May's Welsh Senedd election are to be reviewed, with potential changes to Welsh-only names that were unpopular. Democracy and Boundary Commission Cymru chief executive Shereen Williams stated that the review aims to ensure constituencies reflect the communities they serve, including cultural heritage and Welsh language use.
The 2025 review created 16 new constituencies for the Senedd expansion, increasing the number of Members of the Senedd from 60 to 96. Williams indicated that while legislation requires single names where possible, bilingual names would be considered if a suitable single name cannot be found that reflects the area's identity.
The review will start from the boundaries used in the recent Senedd elections, rather than a blank slate. Officials also plan to ensure an equal population spread of approximately 150,000 people per constituency, within a 10% margin, and align communities with shared cultural similarities. A public consultation is expected in 2027, with the review anticipated to be completed in time for the 2030 elections. A follow-up review is also planned for 2038.
