Train passengers travelling on the West Coast Main Line are being urged to plan ahead this weekend as Network Rail undertakes crucial bridge replacement work near Carstairs. The extensive engineering project will lead to significant disruption for services between Glasgow and Carlisle/Preston, starting on Saturday, 15 June, and lasting until Monday, 17 June.
The essential work involves replacing a bridge that carries the railway over the A70 road, a vital piece of infrastructure that has reached the end of its operational life. This complex undertaking necessitates the complete closure of the line through the affected area, impacting services operated by Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express, as well as ScotRail's intercity routes.
During the 48-hour closure, passengers should anticipate longer journey times and changes to their usual travel plans. Avanti West Coast services will be diverted via Edinburgh, adding considerable time to journeys. Similarly, TransPennine Express passengers heading north of Carlisle will need to use alternative transport. ScotRail services between Glasgow Central and Lanark will also be affected, with bus replacement services in operation for part of the route.
Network Rail has stressed the importance of this work for the long-term reliability and safety of the West Coast Main Line, one of the busiest rail corridors in the UK. While acknowledging the inconvenience, they highlight that carrying out such major engineering during a planned weekend closure minimises disruption compared to longer, more frequent closures.
Travellers are strongly advised to check the latest information before setting off. Updates can be found on the National Rail Enquiries website, as well as on the individual train operator websites for Avanti West Coast, TransPennine Express, and ScotRail. Real-time information will be crucial for navigating the revised schedules and understanding alternative transport options.
