Millions of passengers face major travel disruption this Easter as Network Rail launches extensive upgrade works across the West Coast Main Line from Friday 29th March to Monday 1st April.
The critical improvements will hit one of Britain's busiest railway routes, forcing significant changes to train services during the bank holiday weekend. Passengers are being urged to check their journeys well in advance.
The works span key sections including Euston, Watford, and Milton Keynes. Major track replacement work is planned near Watford, whilst vital bridge refurbishments are scheduled further north. Overhead line equipment will also be upgraded as part of the modernisation drive.
The upgrades form part of broader preparations for future connectivity, including elements linked to the HS2 project. The improvements aim to boost reliability across the line, which connects London with major cities in the Midlands, North West England, and Scotland.
Travellers using Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway services should expect disruption including diversions, longer journey times, and replacement bus services in some areas.
Network Rail typically schedules major engineering works during bank holidays when fewer commuters travel. However, Easter remains popular for leisure trips, making the timing particularly challenging for families and holidaymakers.
Passengers should check National Rail Enquiries for the latest travel information, with detailed timetables and alternative routes available closer to the date.
