Jack Whaley, a 22-year-old from Doncaster, has clinched the US Amateur Championship, beating American Jay Leng Jr 4&3 at Merion. This triumph makes Whaley only the second Englishman to win the title since 1911, following Matt Fitzpatrick in 2013.
The victory is a game-changer for Whaley, who attends Florida State University, as it guarantees him a spot in the fields for the Masters, US Open, and The Open at St Andrews in 2027.
Whaley entered the contest as an underdog against Leng Jr, who ranks 23rd in the world amateur golf rankings, 67 places higher than Whaley. Despite slipping two down after the opening 18 holes in Sunday's 36-hole encounter, Whaley staged a superb comeback, making back-to-back birdies and winning four consecutive holes. He sealed his win with a birdie putt on the 15th hole.
