A Which? air conditioning expert has outlined five key recommendations for consumers, based on tests of 45 air conditioners. These tips aim to help users make informed choices when buying and maintaining their units.
One crucial piece of advice is to always check the recommended room size for an air conditioner. Failing to do so could lead to an underpowered unit that uses more electricity to cool a space. A simple formula involves multiplying a room's dimensions in feet by five to determine the required British Thermal Unit (BTU).
The expert also noted that the most expensive air conditioners are not necessarily the best performers. Tests indicated that some cheaper models were more energy-efficient, with running costs varying from approximately 17p to 31p per hour on maximum settings. Consumers are advised to consider running costs alongside the initial purchase price.
Maintenance tips include regularly draining water from the unit to prevent mould and bacteria growth, which can cause a musty smell. Additionally, keeping filters and fans clean is essential, as dirt and dust build-up can force the unit to work harder, increasing running costs and potentially releasing allergens into the air. Old units should be disposed of correctly via local council sites to prevent the release of harmful greenhouse gases.
