Wigan is preparing to say goodbye to rugby league legend Sir Billy Boston today, with his funeral scheduled to take place at Wigan Warriors' Brick Community Stadium at 12:30 BST. Sir Billy, the first player in rugby league's 130-year history to receive a knighthood, passed away last month at the age of 92.
Before the service, a cortege will journey through Wigan, arriving at the stadium. The West Stand will be open for supporters as Sir Billy makes his final passage through the Stadium Tunnel, followed by a private burial.
The Boston family has requested that those attending wear traditional funeral attire, though items featuring Wigan Warriors' cherry red, such as scarves, ties, and headwear, are also welcomed. Members of the public are invited to pay their respects along the funeral cortege route through Wigan.
Born in Cardiff in 1934, Boston signed for Wigan in 1953 when he was 19. He was selected for the 1954 Great Britain side, becoming the first black British player to tour Australia and New Zealand. He achieved 478 tries in 488 games for Wigan, contributing to three Challenge Cups and a Championship title. In his career, Boston scored 571 tries, a total surpassed only by Australian legend Brian Bevan in top-class rugby league.
