A large grass fire in Stourbridge has spread to and destroyed several houses, a deeply concerning sign of more extreme fire behaviour in the UK, according to Dr Thomas Smith, Associate Professor in Environmental Geography at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
Dr Smith noted that it is still highly unusual for wildfires to destroy homes in the UK, with the first such incidents occurring during the record-breaking July 2022 heatwave. The combination of exceptional heat and prolonged dry conditions is creating fires that spread faster, burn more intensely, and increasingly threaten communities.
While the cause of the Stourbridge fire is yet to be determined, Dr Smith highlighted that the vast majority of wildfires in the UK are started by human activity. During periods of extreme fire weather, a single ignition source in dry vegetation can lead to rapid fire spread.
Residents may have been advised to wet wooden fences to reduce the likelihood of fire spreading to their property. Dr Rory Hadden, Rushbrook Senior Lecturer in Fire Investigation at the University of Edinburgh, explained that wetting fences is a good short-term solution to make the material harder to ignite, though its effect is unlikely to last long.
Wildfires require different firefighting tactics compared to house fires. Fire and Rescue Services must be prepared to respond to both types of fires simultaneously, often requiring different equipment, training, and specialist skills, as wildfires increasingly threaten homes at the rural-urban interface.
