Williams, 44, made her return to tennis in June, while Alcaraz, 22, had been recovering from a wrist injury since April. Alcaraz admitted to feeling nerves, having been off tour for almost five months.
Earlier in the tournament, Britain’s Henry Patten and Czech partner Katerina Siniakova caused an upset by defeating top seeds Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka in the first round. Patten and Siniakova secured a 1-4 4-2 10-2 comeback victory, with Patten noting that Siniakova acing Djokovic on match point in the tie-break was "pretty fun." In the women’s singles qualifying rounds, British players Fran Jones, Katie Swan, and Harriet Dart all progressed to the second round. Jones defeated Nuria Brancaccio 6-3 6-4, Dart overcame Jordyn Hazelitt 6-0 6-7 (1) 6-1, and Swan beat Katrina Scott 6-3 6-1. Jodie Burrage and Henry Searle exited their respective qualifying matches.
