The all-star pairing had won their opening match against Erin Routliffe and Lloyd Glasspool, but could not repeat that form in a 5-4(7-4) 4-1 defeat.
Top seeds Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka also exited early, losing their first match to Katerina Siniakova and Henry Patten.
Married pair Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina reached the semi-finals with a win over doubles world No 1s Siniakova and Patten, and will face Bencic and Cobolli next.
