Wiltshire residents are being urged by their local council to take advantage of improved access to IVF treatment, following a motion passed that calls on NHS Wiltshire to increase funding for the service. The move aims to bring the local authority's provision more in line with national guidelines, which recommend three cycles of IVF for eligible patients under 43.
NICE guidelines set out clear criteria for who should receive IVF treatment, including age, fertility history and medical conditions. However, NHS Wiltshire currently only funds one cycle of treatment per patient, leaving many residents facing a postcode lottery when it comes to accessing NHS-funded fertility services. This means that those living in Wiltshire may have fewer chances of having a baby through IVF compared to patients in other areas where local ICBs adhere more closely to NICE guidelines.
The issue highlights the stark contrasts in access to fertility treatment across the UK, with different regions implementing varying funding policies. This can lead to situations where patients in one area receive more comprehensive support than those in another, despite both meeting national clinical criteria. For couples struggling with infertility, accessing multiple cycles of IVF is crucial – each cycle involves a complex series of procedures and success rates vary greatly.
Offering three cycles, as recommended by NICE, significantly increases the chances of a successful pregnancy. The financial burden of private IVF treatment can be prohibitively expensive, with costs ranging from £10,000 to over £15,000 per cycle. This is why NHS funding plays such a critical role in ensuring equitable access to fertility services.
The council's motion could set an important precedent for other local authorities seeking to address the geographical inequalities in fertility treatment access. By pushing for greater alignment with NICE guidelines, Wiltshire Council aims to provide its residents with more comprehensive and consistent care – regardless of where they live within the region.
